LAMED Policy on Non-Physician Attendance at CME Activities
Preamble:
The primary reason for the establishment of the Lima Area Medical Education Development Corporation was a desire to facilitate and improve the process by which the physicians in the greater Lima area obtained continuing medical education. In addition the corporation endeavors to produce activities which will help physicians comply with the relicensure mechanisms of the State of Ohio. Therefore LAMED’s designated target audience is the physician population in the greater Lima area. Efforts to expand the services offered by LAMED to non-physician populations must be carefully monitored so that neither the objective nor the subjective appeal of our programming to the physician audience is eroded. While allied health groups have legitimate educational needs, those needs are not necessarily the concern of LAMED and are not the reason that LAMED exists.
Specifically, it must always remain the case that curricula be designed first and foremost to satisfy the needs of the physicians. At the same time it is realized that activities may occasionally be of legitimate value to other medical staff members and allied health personnel. The policies regarding attendance of non-physician groups at LAMED activities are as follows:
- Technicians, nurses, or hospital-based pharmacists may attend at the discretion of the CME Committee or the CME Director. They will be issued certificates of attendance. There will be no tuition charge unless there is also a tuition charge of the physicians.
- If the activity will be of significant interest to nurses, application will be made to the education department of either St. Rita’s Medical Center or Lima Memorial Hospital for nursing credit.
- Pharmacy credits will not be sought. However, a certificate of attendance will be issued to any pharmacist attending.
- Clinical dietitians may attend activities which are devoted to a discussion of nutrition to a significant extent. The decision as to whether or not the amount of nutrition-oriented information in a given activity is significant shall be made by the LAMED CME Committee or CME Director. There will be no tuition charge unless there is also a tuition charge for the physicians.
- LAMED activities frequently are supported by commercial companies. One representative from the supporting company may attend the activity. The presence of additional representatives from that company will be discouraged, but if attending will pay their own expenses if a meal is served in connection with the activity. Sales displays will be permitted at activities only at the discretion of the CME Committee and then must follow all criteria set forth in the Policy for Commercial Support.
- Sales representatives of companies other than the supporting company will not be permitted to attend LAMED activities.
