LAMED Guidelines for Commercial Support of Medical Education

Purpose:
To comply with recommendations of the AMA, ACCME, OSMA, and any regulations promulgated by the FDA with respect to commercial support of continuing medical education activities.

Recognition:
LAMED recognizes that support from commercial vendors and manufactures can supplement the resources of the consortium members. Support should be provided in a manner which does not directly support the promotion of products and/or services of such vendors or manufacturers, but rather complements the educational needs and mission of LAMED.

Support Modalities:
w   Visiting Faculty are to be selected by LAMED (Director, CME Committee, Department Chairmen) for their expertise and teaching ability. Topics, objectives and educational methodology are to be determine by LAMED. Faculty honoraria and expenses are to be paid directly by LAMED.

w   Food and Beverages may be included in the grant, as agreed to by the grantor and LAMED. These may be acquired via St. Rita’s Medical Center or Lima Memorial Hospital’s catering services, or arranged via outside vendors.

¨             Educational Materials provided by the grantor must be reviewed and approved by LAMED prior to distribution. Faculty supplied syllabi will be copied for distribution by LAMED.

w   Entertainment via commercial support is strongly discouraged.

Grant Acceptance:
Grants may be accepted assuming compliance with support modalities listed above, and providing:

w   Selection of faculty and topics must remain the responsibility of LAMED;
w   Topics and presentations will be designed to present objectives and comprehensive education related to the topic; and,
w   Scientific and scholarly validity of content and/or materials must be acceptable to LAMED.

Management and Administration:
These issues will be the responsibility of LAMED. Included will be receipt and distribution of support (funds and materials), and coordination of the activities and services (audiovisual, catering, classrooms, and educational materials).

This document will be subject to revision based upon legislative or regulatory actions of the FDA, PMA, and appropriate accrediting bodies.
